📝 Retinoids 101: A simplified breakdown! Retin 📝 Retinoids 101: A simplified breakdown!

Retinoids are the crown JEWEL of your skincare routine!! 👑

💂‍♂️It’s never too early to start.
💂‍♂️Always approach cautiously.
💂‍♂️Baby steps for the WIN: Begin with a retinol ester or retinol before working your way up to the heavy hitters aka retinoic acid.
🤯Consistency over intensity 🔑

Is Gen Z really onto something here? My answer: eh Is Gen Z really onto something here? My answer: ehhhhhh 🙄

It’s actually not the most economical as cutting a larger patch into small ones doesn’t let it adhere to ur skin as evenly as you would think, it can get messy leading to more irritations than anticipated, AND if you have such widespread acne that you are requiring a LARGE patch: seek out medical treatment instead 🤓

💡For best results, just stick to the acne patches OR small sized generic ones.

📚 Hydrocolloid is a hydrophilic material that attracts water. Traditionally, it’s used on open wounds to promote a moist environment and decrease healing time. With regards to acne, it helps to decrease the intensity of a pimple by extracting the inflammatory “stuff” without physical manipulation. Basically, it sucks the gunk out without any risk of scarring that comes from popping! 🙏👼🏻

👩‍⚕️ Whatever you decide to do just remember: these treat the symptom, they’re NOT the cure.

When you are approached by one of your favorite br When you are approached by one of your favorite brands to do a #PillowTalkDerm in a fantasy bedroom in your PJS... you say YASSS🙌💥!

Exactly a year ago, right before the world came to a screeching halt, I had a pinch me moment and filmed this 🤯

Looking back, I’m so grateful to have done this as it was my final pampering PLEASURE literally days before the world locked down. And looking back, I am in DESPERATE need of a manicure today 😝 also the shot at 33seconds of my face is exactly how I felt then and still do now: “wtf is going on?!” LOL and “I hope to God they don’t realize they got the wrong girl on set 🙄🤣”

I wanted to finally share it nearly a year later. I hope it transports you today,as it did me.

Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️
For all my confused mama’s-to-be🤰Let’s talk For all my confused mama’s-to-be🤰Let’s talk about what you can do to best take care of your skin with safe and highly effective ingredients!

When it comes to pregnancy skincare (and pregnancy in general), there is so much fear mongering, I nearly lost my mind while I was pregnant 🤯 “don’t do this”, “don’t eat that”, “don’t use this cream because of this preservative...” don’t, dont, DONT! I felt helpless and fearful and quite frankly HATE being told “don’t” in general..

We need to shift that perspective and start leading with LESS fear-mothering!! 🚨🚨🚨

🤰Pregnancy skincare is about making you feel your best during one of the most beautiful and physically trying times of your life without any added stress - while also helping you feel empowered to tackle the skin issues that arise throughout your pregnancy!

❤️ hopefully this chart will help ease your mind and shift the focus to what we CAN do to help ourselves throughout pregnancy 💪

📺 In my newest @youtube video we tackle:
✅ hyperpigmentation
✅ visible vasculature
✅ herniated fat pads
✅ receding underlying bony structures

And lastly, quick TIP:
Regardless of the type of eye cream used, apply it BEFORE you moisturize the rest of your face 💡

Every year, I take a trip around the sun. Today ma Every year, I take a trip around the sun. Today marks the first day of my newest trip 🎂 And, what a way to start this upcoming year 🙈

I am so honored. So very honored. Thank you @instylemagazine for this incredible compliment of being named one the Badass 50 for 2021: a group of incredible women working to make the world a better place. I’m actually kind of speechless and feel like they might have made a big mistake ... and just haven’t realized it... yet? 😳🤯👋 (too late 🙊)

When the explosion happened in Lebanon last summer, I felt utterly helpless. Not one to be comfortable with that feeling, and having my sisters by my side, we leaned into the virtual community that I've built over the years on social media. Although I always knew I had a special connection with my community, I had not realized exactly how deep it went until this point. Truth be told, I almost had cold feet before my sister hit launch on the GoFundMe page. I was scared of asking for help. I was scared of failing those who needed it the most in Lebanon. And most of all, I was scared I would be met with a cold indifference. Ultimately, I put my fears aside as this was indeed so much bigger than that. The success of our campaign is 110% due to the fact that it was a worldwide effort, spearheaded by the community WE have actually all built together, our own virtual Pillowtalkderm family.

This honor today isn’t just mine, but all of YOURS. So I wanted to share the good news and say thank YOU for being a part of this ride, and family ❤️🥂
Life is confusing enough.... determining your skin Life is confusing enough.... determining your skin type shouldn’t be 🙄☝️

🚨 If there is ONE lesson you take from the video, it is this:
Skin Type and Skin Condition are two very DIFFERENT things! A very simplified rule of thumb is to cleanse and moisturize based on your skin type, but to treat your skin with strong actives based on your skin condition🤓

💫So excited to have been invited as an external 💫So excited to have been invited as an external dermatologist to talk about not just the importance of skincare ingredients but also (and in my humble opinion, more importantly) FORMULATION of skincare products with @dr_oz and @rociorivera78 from @lorealparis 💥🙈👋

Lesson du jour: French baguettes 🥖 are NOT created equal across the board. A baguette made in Paris is very different than a baguette made in (no offense to anyone) ohhhhh North Dakota? 🤷‍♀️ my point is: ingredients are only one small part of the picture... HOW those ingredients are put together to actually deliver the best results, is the BIGGER part of the story 🤓👆
Can we ever actually have it all? While sick wit Can we ever actually have it all?

While sick with COVID, I had the biggest pleasure speaking with @sara_riff from @havingitallpodcast ❤️

Unlike other podcasts I’ve been on where we discuss purely cosmetics, skincare & trends, we go in a little deeper in this one ☝️ From understanding the detrimental long term effects on our psyche of filters, to how when people FEEL their best they actually DO better, as well as my own background growing up through the lens of an immigrant family in the US and my journey to motherhood 💥

💡I hope you guys enjoy thiS... it’s slightly different than the others I’ve been on in the past. But keep in mind we recorded it while I was on day 6 of isolation... and in a more philosophical state of mind 🤷‍♀️🙏❤️

I digressed... so how to get smooth lips minus the stickiness? Here’s my lip HACK:

Lip Basting 💋

⚠️ if you have a history of cold sores, approach with caution. Less is more. Use a low percentage acid and limit it to once a week. If you get many recurrences of cold sores in the course of a year, speak to ur Doc about suppressive therapies 💡

Personally, I currently do this with @lorealusa 10% glycolic acid (this is the MAX % I would use and may not be suited for all) followed by @weleda skin food to lips ( I’m not a huge fan of it’s taste and smell- but it’s effects are 🙌) #notsponsored

When I was diagnosed with COVID back in November, When I was diagnosed with COVID back in November, what weighed heaviest on me was not “will I be ok?” But rather: “who else did I spread this to... and will THEY be ok?” 🤯

The two biggest issues with this virus are
1. It’s not just about you.
2. You don’t know how bad you’ll respond to it if you do get it.

💉It is true that vaccines are not a miracle cure. BUT, vaccines help to save lives by both protecting you from getting sick and by helping you from getting seriously ill (and avoiding the hospital) even if you do get COVID-19.

🛑👩‍🔬Stopping a pandemic requires using ALL THE TOOLS we have available to us. I am incredibly in awe and grateful to the scientists and researchers who have come together across the world to bring us this vaccine in record time. Thank you for giving us hope and for bringing us one step closer to ending this motherf*+%er of a pandemic 🙏

Any questions about my experience, please feel free to ask me below ❤️

🚨 Getting COVID-19 might offer some natural protection or immunity from reinfection with the virus that causes COVID-19. But it's not clear how long this protection lasts. Because reinfection is possible and COVID-19 can cause severe medical complications, it's recommended that people who have already had It still get a vaccine to minimize future risk.

📝 Tackling Hyperpigmentation 📺 New YOUTUBE 📝 Tackling Hyperpigmentation

📺 New YOUTUBE video is up NOW

🤔What is hyperpigmentation?
To keep it simple, it presents as variations of darker spots within your skin tone that can make your overall skin look “ruddy”.

👤 Who does it affect?
ALL SKIN TYPES deal with hyperpigmentation to various degrees. But patients with overall darker skin tones, and those with darker underlying olive tones, tend to get affected more frequently and/or severely.

🤷‍♀️ What causes it?
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation(PIH): think acne marks left behind or residual changes from a rash
- Melasma: she’s a b*%ch and my nemesis 💪
- Sun damage: nuff said

⚠️ Beware of fear mongering:
- hydroquinone is NOT the devil 👿
- The fear stems from studies comparing 🍎 to 🍌
- In the first study, the hydroquinone was CONTAMINATED with mercury: 🚨 buying hydroquinone off the black market can sometimes be laced with mercury as mercury itself limits pigment production dramatically, BUT STAY AWAY as the mercury can lead to toxicity ☠️
- The second study was based on rats receiving VERY HIGH doses of SYSTEMIC hydroquinone. The toxicity observed WAS NOT OBSERVED on dermal (aka skin) studies.
- Rats and humans process hydroquinone very differently. The correlation with renal cancer to SYSTEMIC hydroquinone in rats has NEVER been Iinked in humans (and it’s been used on humans for over 50 years - so the data is plenty). The results just DO NOT COMPARE.

🤰Avoid retinoids and hydroquinone:
- Arbutin is a fuzzy one as it technically converts to hydroquinone BUT it depends on the type, formulation, concentration... it’s a case by case, so either avoid it because it’s an unknown or speak to your OB.

💥All of these ingredients without the use of SUNSCREEN are basically a waste of money, and therefore useless 💸💥

It’s the most wonderful time of the year... unle It’s the most wonderful time of the year... unless you have eczema 🔥

If you ask me, uncontrollable itchiness is in one of my top WORST sensations in the world. Eczema is defined by itch, and presents with scaly, inflamed, red plaques that disrupts your skin barrier, leading to water loss (👋 dry skin) and increased risk of infections.

Skincare is CRITICAL! So what can YOU do?
👩‍⚕️Liberal use of emollients used frequently is essential, and a MUST especially after a shower
👩‍⚕️Avoiding hot showers is key as is limiting your use of harsh soaps
👩‍⚕️Gentle, non-foaming, cleansers that are fragrance free and dye free are best
👩‍⚕️Don’t confuse “fragrance-free” and “unscented” as “unscented” as products actually contain fragrance that has been masked
👩‍⚕️This also applies to the detergent you are using for your clothes, fragrance free and dye free are best for your sensitive skin
👩‍⚕️Say goodbye to spandex and hello to loose cotton clothing if your eczema is more widespread

And finally, if these steps aren’t enough for you, a visit to your dermatologist can help squash your itch through various prescriptions and other tricks up our sleeves! ❤️💫

Thank you @hannahbaxward and @coveteur for this piece 🙌
📝 Acids 101 Before we dive in 🚨 - ALL SKIN 📝 Acids 101

Before we dive in 🚨
- ALL SKIN TONES CAN USE ACIDS! I don’t know where the myth got started that darker skin tones can’t 🤷‍♀️ you guys absolutely CAN 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️ (just make sure u wear SPF, no matter how fair or how dark u are)
- Not all acids are exfoliating acids
- I would NOT use an acid on my face daily unless it’s an AHA or a PHA at a SUPER low concentration

The are 3 main groups of exfoliating acids:
- AHA: my personal favorite, glycolic especially! Glycolic is the smallest and therefore goes the deepest: so not only does it exfoliate the top, it promotes collagen production deeper within the dermis. oh! And it’s safe to use in pregnancy 🤰#winwinwin
- BHA: this one is for the acne prone skin out there! It’s also my acid of choice if you have seborrheic dermatitis (aka face dandruff), or scaly skin conditions like psoriasis 🩺
- PHA: paging all sensitive souls. These are the FATTER cousins of AHAs, so although they can’t go as deep, they are less irritating! 🔬

My newest video breaking these down is up on YouTube now 📺 I’ll dive into the AHAs with you guys this Saturday ⏰

🤓I’m just curious if you nerds like these type of posts? They’re no joke to make, but worth the effort if they are worth it for you! Please let me know below ❤️✏️

I often get asked by many of you: “who should I I often get asked by many of you: “who should I go see for cosmetic procedures?”

💡Dermatologists have been at the forefront of cosmetic procedures, pioneering treatments with Botox, lasers, fillers, threads, collagen stimulants, liposuction, chemical peels, skin cancer removal and their cosmetic revisions!

🚨 Beware of many people out there claiming to be “certified dermatologists” when in fact they are NOT 😳. There are only TWO certifications that matters (in the USA) that certifies a doctor (MD or DO) as a dermatologist and an authority within this field —> those are the certifications by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology.

🤷‍♀️Why does it matter? Because it takes a minimum of 12 years to become a Board certified dermatologist and gain not only the knowledge but also the skill set needed 🙌😳

Here are my STATS:

🎓 Undergrad/MED school: 7-year BA/MD honors program at George Washington University @gwuniversity (7years)
🔬Research in Dermatology @harvard (1 year)
🏨 Internship in general medicine and surgery at Tufts Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (1 year)
📚 Residency in Dermatology at Tufts Medical (3 years) @tuftsmedicalcenter
🍾 Year 12= Board Certified in Dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology

The two trusted sources I recommend you check out to find someone truly qualified for your next cosmetic procedure?
